Area 51
More of the unknown...what is Area 51? Here's a quote from Wikipedia:

"Area 51 is a remote tract of land in the southwestern portion of Lincoln County in southern Nevada in the western United States. Situated at its center, on the southern shore of a dry lakebed (salt lake), is a large military airfield, one of the most secretive places in the world. The base's primary purpose is to support development and testing of experimental aircraft and weapons systems."

What I found curious, both because it's just interesting and because I did not know (despite studying this kind of thing for years), is exactly where Area 51 is and what the land around it is (reportedly) in terms of military, civilian or private usage.

The orange rectangle on the map below is Area 51/Nellis Airforce Base and the Nevada Test Site on a map of the United States. The actual "Area 51" is very small as you will see in subsequent pictures:

Here's a legend of land use for that orange rectangle and finally, a map of the Nevada Test Site, Nellis Airforce Base and Area 51. Note how small Area 51 really is.

The Wikipedia article on Area 51 is very thorough with great links. It also says something that I did know before and that I find amazing and provoking: until recently, Area 51 was not visible on Google Earth.
